At Simrane, we always carry a little bit of India with us. We came back from our last development trip with our hearts full of sounds and colours. Discover these memories captured in Polavaram in Andhra Pradesh, where our Kalamkari collection is made.
Check out the images of our trip captured by the talented Shreya Basu.
Behind the scenes of the creation of our Kalamkari designs, in the heart of the engraving workshop. The block-print technique is made possible by the expertise of our block engravers. Sometimes carved from teak blocks over 150 years old, our Kalamkari designs would not exist without the talent of these craftsmen. We paid a visit to the man who has been engraving the blocks we have been using at Simrane for over 30 years.
Sometimes carved from blocks of teak over 150 years old, our Kalamkari would not be the same without the talent of these master carvers.
Water is the essential element without which the colour of our fabrics cannot be revealed. On several occasions, printers have to rinse fabrics to remove residues from the various printing stages. With their gestures, they reproduce the movement of the fabric caught in the current of the river to ensure that the printed panel is rinsed smoothly.
Once washed in the pond, the cotton panels are spread out in the field a stone’s throw from the workshop. They remain there until the next morning, guarded by coconut trees. This is the final stage in the production of these Kalamkari, the fruit of Nature’s wonders.
